CHAPTER 12

“Joanne,” Miranda said as the woman picked up her phone. She’d made it back to her car and was pulling away from the crime scene when she’d called the older woman. “I need to get in touch with the Blacks as soon as possible. Is there a way to call them or something?”

“I can give them a call for you,” she said. “They don’t sleep, but they also don’t answer their door during the day time. What’s it about?”

“Tell them I need to speak with them immediately,” she said firmly. “Make sure they understand that this is serious.”

“I will,” Joanne said before hanging up.

Miranda was starting to get the feeling that she was the only one who could keep Daniel Black from getting arrested for murder by the Agency. With his ring being found at the crime scene, it seemed to point directly to him. She had a niggling feeling that whoever was barefoot on that hill was the one who had killed the fisherman.

But how did the ring get out there? That was the question. If she hadn’t spoken to Daniel Black yesterday and heard that his ring had been missing, she, too, would have assumed it was Daniel. So if it wasn’t, did that mean someone was trying to make it look like it was? And why would anyone want to do that?

If that was the case, someone had it in for Daniel and wanted him to go down for this. The only way to find out was to speak with Daniel Black and the rest of his family to try and figure it out.

Slowly driving down the road, waiting for Joanne to call her back, Miranda tried to come up with some sort of rational explanation for all of it. If someone was here to frame Daniel, wouldn’t people notice that there was someone new in town? Maybe whoever it was didn’t make their presence known?

Lost in thought, she jumped when her phone began to ring. Needing to concentrate, she pulled over to the side of the road. It was a one-lane gravel road that didn’t seem as though it got much traffic.

“They said to come by,” Joanne said as she answered, “but come to the back door.”

“The back door?” Miranda asked. “Why the back?”

“It’s just what they prefer during the day,” she explained. “I think they’re also trying to lay low for a bit and don’t want anyone to see them opening the door for you.”

“Okay, thank you, Joanne,” Miranda said before ending the call.

She turned at the next road and headed towards their farmhouse as quickly as she could. How long did she have before the people from the Agency showed up, pretending to be federal agents? She didn’t think she had long. The P.I.’s from the Agency weren’t known for waiting around.

More than likely, they were on their way at that very moment. With any luck, perhaps the people they sent would be rational. With what she’d discovered, they’d have to listen to her about what she’d found.
